About Beautiful Biology

Beautiful Biology, an initiative of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and its Janelia Research Campus, aims to cultivate interest and curiosity in the life sciences through this portal of stunning images showcasing the largely invisible biological world. Janelia, known for innovations in microscopy and its open sharing of scientific information, has collected images from our own researchers, as well as from colleagues around the world, and has accompanied them with trusted scientific information about the images.

We hope that Beautiful Biology leaves you with a sense of awe about our natural world and inspires you to learn more about the science behind the way it works.

Our Contributors

All content hosted on Beautiful Biology was contributed by members of the scientific or photography communities, many of whom are part of HHMI and Janelia and many others of whom are from all around the world. We are grateful for their generous contributions.

You can find the names and affiliations of our contributors on the content pages featuring their visuals. We would like to offer special recognition to those contributors who have submitted a significant amount of content and who have pledged their continued support for this project as their research progresses.
