Current Programs
HHMI Investigator Program
The HHMI Investigator Program supports more than 250 investigators, located at more than 60 research institutions across the United States, who are widely known for their scientific discoveries, their innovation, and their success in pushing the bounds of knowledge in biomedical research.
Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program
The Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program supports diversity in the biomedical research community by recruiting and retaining individuals from groups underrepresented in the life sciences. Fellows receive funding for their postdoctoral training and, if eligible, in their early career years as independent faculty.
Janelia Research Campus
HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia, cracks open scientific fields by breaking through technical and intellectual barriers. Our integrated teams of lab scientists and tool-builders pursue a small number of scientific questions with potential for transformative impact.
Medically Trained Scientists Program
The Medically Trained Scientists Program supports individuals at US institutions who are trained in medicine and are highly committed to basic, fundamental research in a biomedical discipline.
Faculty Scholars Program
With this new program, HHMI, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Simons Foundation are collaborating to provide funding, mentoring opportunities, and other critical resources to encourage early career scientists. The inaugural group of Faculty Scholars was named in 2016.
International Programs
HHMI and partners launched the International Research Scholar Program in 2017, with an aim to develop outstanding early career scientists worldwide. In 2009, HHMI helped establish the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH). In 2016, K-RITH merged with the Africa Centre to form the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI).
