Inside Philanthropy describes the launch of AI@HHMI, an ambitious new initiative to drive biomedical science centered at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus. September 2024STAT highlighted how HHMI Investigator and Rockefeller University neuroscientist Erich Jarvis is studying vocal learning in birds to help us better understand our own brains. March 2024HHMI Investigator Cassandra Extavour spoke with Quanta Magazine about her journey to become the first Black woman to receive tenure in the biological sciences at Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. February 2024Scientists at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus compiled photographs of more than 74,000 fruit fly brains detailed down to the individual neuron, Scientific American reports. July 2023

HHMI Nobel Laureates

David Baker, PhD

2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

HHMI Investigator David Baker was honored for using computational methods to design new proteins – the building blocks of life – which have already proven to be a powerful tool for creating new materials and medical treatments.

Carolyn Bertozzi, PhD

2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

HHMI Investigator Carolyn Bertozzi was honored for the development of bioorthogonal chemistry, which enables scientists to create targeted chemical reactions in living organisms without disrupting normal biological processes.

Jennifer Doudna, PhD

2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

HHMI Investigator Jennifer Doudna was honored for discovering how CRISPR/Cas9 – part of a bacteria’s immune system – could be harnessed as a genetic “cut-and-paste” tool. This breakthrough has opened the door to numerous medical applications.
