Forty-four physicians who want to combine clinical medicine with laboratory research have received new postdoctoral fellowships from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The fellowhips provide support for three years of postdoctoral study in leading basic science laboratories.
HHMI physician-postdoctoral fellows train for careers as physician scientists, combining research into basic biological processes and disease mechanisms with clinical experience treating patients. The combination should enable them to cross traditional boundaries between clinical medicine and biomedical research and to apply the basic sciences of genetics and molecular biology to the treatment and prevention of disease.
This year’s postdoctoral fellows include 31 physicians from the United States and seven from other countries. More than 90 physicians are currently being supported under the fellowship program, at an annual expenditure of approximately $8 million.
In addition to postdoctoral research fellowships for physicians, HHMI awards fellowships for research training of medical students and for predoctoral study in the biological sciences.
HHMI’s grants programs support science education in the United States and a select group of researchers in other countries, complementing the Institute’s principal mission: the conduct of biomedical research with its own scientific teams at 72 medical centers and research institutions nationwide. Altogether, the Institute has awarded more than $1 billion in grants, primarily to enhance science education from preschool through postdoctoral studies. A list of fellowship recipients follows:
