Genetics of Human Gene Expression

Vivian Cheung studies RNA sequences and structures. Specifically, Cheung and her team investigate means of RNA synthesis and processing, such as RNA polymerase pausing, that regulate cellular response to physiologic needs and stress. Their research has led to new approaches to identify regulators of gene expression and showed that RNA sequences can be different from underlying DNA sequences. Now, the team is investigating the mechanisms behind dynamic changes in RNA sequences and structures in normal human cells and how dysregulation of these processes leads to neurologic diseases such as a juvenile-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
