The food we eat starts from a seed. Mary Gehring investigates the processes that regulate plant reproduction and seed development. Gehring’s team works with both model plant species and phylogenetically diverse flowering plants to identify the genes and molecular mechanisms required for seed viability. Gehring seeks to use this knowledge along with genomic, epigenetic, and synthetic biology approaches to engineer alternative modes of seed development and promote climate resiliency.
