Eric Gouaux strives to understand the molecular and functional underpinnings of the sense of hearing and signaling in the brain. Gouaux and his team are specifically interested in the site of mechanical to electrical signal transduction in hair cells of the cochlea and the molecular organization and function of the brain’s chemical synapses. The team works to develop biochemical tools and reagents to facilitate their work. Their research harnesses the latest methods in cryo-electron microscopy, with complementary optical microscopies, to elucidate molecular structure and organization, and employs multiple biophysical methods, including electrophysiology, to uncover mechanisms of function in the nervous system.
