Molecular Structure and Function at the Synapse

Eric Gouaux is interested in the molecular fundamentals of chemical synapses – the specialized junctions between neurons responsible for communication. Using biochemical, biophysical, and electrophysiological methods, Gouaux and his team investigate the atomic structure and biological function of synaptic receptors, channels, and transporters. They also seek to develop new tools to improve on existing methodologies. Their work provides insight into a crucial element of the nervous system and may inform the development of new therapeutic agents.
