Abraham Beyene is interested in developing new nanoscale optical probes to study neurotransmission. Beyene and his team focus particularly on probes for chemical signaling molecules, including neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and neurohormones. The team leverages tools of materials chemistry to create new ways to image and sense in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) part of the spectrum. Because SWIR exhibits remarkable tissue penetration and has limited spectral overlap with existing neuroscience probes, it holds great potential for multiplexing with existing toolsets while minimizing crosstalk.
