Alternatively, they have the option of deferring activation of the Gilliam award for one year. Once the Gilliam award has been activated, it cannot be paused.
The Gilliam award administration requires that funds be disbursed to the Fellow as well as the institution. Because of this, the Thesis Adviser and Fellow must be at the same institution or institutions with shared financial agreements that would permit financial administration of the award.
If the co-advisor would provide additional expertise or benefit to the student (and will actually be serving in that capacity for the student), it can be helpful; however, it is not a requirement for junior faculty who apply. A typical Gilliam adviser cohort consists of faculty at all ranks.
