Over the last two decades, biomedical engineering (BME) education has played a major role in our understanding of complex medical challenges and has made a substantial contribution towards addressing these high value biological and medical challenges. However, a vast majority of the challenges analyzed and addressed by biomedical engineers have focused on medical problems in developed countries. With rapid globalization, growth in emerging economies, ever increasing interaction between the developed and the developing world and the fact that biomedical challenges in developing countries present the next frontier in engineering research and education, it is important to provide our students with the toolset to understand, analyze and solve these new class of complex problems at the interface of engineering, medicine and global public health.

The biomedical engineering educational program proposed here will focus on training engineers with a global focus and a deep understanding of challenges in emerging markets and resource limited settings. The opportunity for our engineers to create solutions, that are focused, targeted and scalable will not only have a transformative potential in altering the healthcare landscape in developing countries but they will also make a deep impact on healthcare in developed countries where issues of rising healthcare costs are among the biggest budgetary challenges.

In order to develop the global focus, emphasize innovation and create awareness of the context and policy without compromising rigor and quality, we propose the creation of a comprehensive engineering education program called that reflects our commitment to quality, exposure, policy, innovation and implementation and context.

The program in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University will focus on training the next generation of engineering scholars who are rigorously trained, have a global perspective in their education, carry a deep understanding of local social, economic and cultural context and will develop a sophisticated sense of public policy necessary for their solutions and technologies to make a lasting impact in the field.

At a global level, we anticipate that the HHMI supported program will create awareness and excitement amongst students for new and complex research problems, will encourage professors to diversify the topics covered and provide opportunities for students and teachers to experiment with new innovative instructional technologies. But above all, we believe that this program will create new and rigorously trained interdisciplinary students, who are well trained through efficient and innovative teaching methods and who are ready to meet the high value, persistent and truly global development challenges of the future.
