As Chief Technology Officer, Gurney leads HHMI in providing the technology and systems that support the Institute’s critical work. He and his team are responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure, platforms, and technology solutions that enable HHMI to pursue its missions of basic scientific discovery, training the next generations of excellent scientists, and enhancing how science is done.
Gurney joined HHMI in February 2025. Prior to HHMI, Gurney was Chief Information Officer at the Van Andel Institute, a nonprofit biomedical research institute, where he modernized the organization’s IT capabilities, developed an AI strategy, and spearheaded efforts to enhance inclusion and collaboration. He previously served as Senior Director of Information Technology & Security at Wolverine Worldwide, a global footwear and apparel corporation, where he oversaw data security, developed a data governance framework, and supported IT operations across multiple continents.
Gurney earned a BS in computer engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Michigan State University.
