As Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Senior Advisor to the President, Seth Grossman manages all aspects of operations at both HHMI’s headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD, and the Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA. Grossman collaborates closely with President Erin O’Shea to ensure that HHMI’s operations effectively execute the objectives, strategy, and vision of the Institute.

Grossman’s career has spanned a range of positions across academia and government. Before arriving at HHMI in 2024, Grossman was Vice President of Administration & Chief Administrative Officer at American University in Washington, DC. There, he helped develop and implement long-term strategic plans to support the university’s mission while overseeing human resources, campus planning, and community and government relations, among many other responsibilities. Prior to AU, Grossman served as Chief of Staff to the President at the University of California and as Counselor to the Secretary in the Department of Homeland Security. He formerly clerked for Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer.

Grossman received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a JD from the Yale University School of Law.
