Sokol joined HHMI in 2022 after serving as a program officer in the basic neuroscience research division of the National Institute of Mental Health where he oversaw grant portfolios for functional neurogenomics and developmental neurobiology. Previously, Sokol was an associate professor at Indiana University (IU) Bloomington where his research focused on regulatory RNA pathways in neural and intestinal stem cells and differentiation. Sokol’s team successfully identified and characterized RNA mechanisms that drive the cell differentiation processes underlying the formation and function of the adult brain and intestine.

Sokol earned a BA in biology from Wesleyan University and a PhD in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from Yale University. Before joining IU’s faculty, Sokol completed his postdoctoral research at Dartmouth Medical School.
