Summary

HHMI names 66 new medical and dental student fellows and 42 HHMI/NIH research scholars.

To help nurture the careers of future medical scientists, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is awarding nearly $3.9 million in fellowships and research scholar positions to 108 medical and dental students to spend a year conducting mentored biomedical research. Physician and dental scientists play a vital role in medically oriented basic research, as well as in translational research to apply basic research discoveries to medical problems.

HHMI offers two programs that immerse medical and dental students in biomedical research. The HHMI-NIH Research Scholars Program brings medical and dental students to live for a year on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Maryland, where they conduct research in NIH laboratories. The HHMI Research Training Fellowships for Medical and Dental Students support year-long fellowships at a research institution of the fellow's choice.

HHMI hopes that these students' research experiences provide them the training and motivation to become medical scientists.

William Galey

"Medical scientists have a deep appreciation for the problems medicine needs to solve,” said William Galey, graduate education program director at HHMI. “They also know how to approach those problems in a research lab setting, so they play a vital role both in medical research and advances in the treatment of disease. HHMI hopes that these students' research experiences provide them the training and motivation to become medical scientists."

Although several dental students previously have participated in the HHMI-NIH Research Scholars program, this is the first year that dental students have also been selected to receive HHMI Research Training Fellowships. The dental student fellows selected this year are from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. The dental student research scholar is from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine.

"We feel it is important to include dental students in our medical research training programs," Galey said. "Not only is there a need to address important dental health issues through biomedical research, but basic dental research has produced some important findings relevant to human medical conditions."

This year a total of 329 students at 87 different medical and dental schools applied for the two programs. The Institute awarded 66 fellowships and named 42 HHMI-NIH research scholars.

HHMI makes a special effort to attract women and minorities underrepresented in the sciences to apply for these programs. Thirty percent of the new fellows and 36 percent of the new HHMI-NIH research scholars are women. Seventeen percent of the fellows and approximately seven percent of the research scholars are minorities underrepresented in the biomedical sciences.

"The impact of a year of research experience can be enormous," said Galey. Follow-up studies of alumni show that more than half consistently go on into research careers. The number of HHMI fellows and research scholars applying for a second year of research support is also increasing. During 2005-2006, 12 research scholars are conducting their second year of research at NIH, compared to seven in 2004-2005 and three in 2003-2004. Two of this year's medical student fellows plan to enter M.D./Ph.D. programs and eight applied to continue their HHMI research fellowship for a second year.

HHMI's fellowships and research scholar positions are complemented by another HHMI program, the Med into Grad Initiative, which addresses the need for more clinically trained scientists by incorporating more clinical training in Ph.D. programs in the life sciences. Thirteen research institutions received grants totaling $10 million this year to develop a clinical component for their graduate students studying the life sciences.

The 2006 research scholars and medical and dental student fellows are:
