Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) named 75 graduate students and 53 medical students to receive new fellowships. The awards include five-year fellowships for students working toward doctoral degrees in the biological sciences and support to enable medical students to devote a year to biomedical research. This year’s predoctoral fellows will study at 27 institutions in the United States. They include 37 men and 38 women. Eight are minorities underrepresented in the sciences. Medical student fellows, including 38 men, 15 women and seven minorities, will conduct biomedical research at 20 U.S. institutions. Through these two programs, HHMI now supports nearly 500 students at more than 70 universities and research centers. Since the fellowship programs began, the Institute has awarded nearly $200 million to 2,000 graduate and medical students.
