Our body uses three main sources of energy: glucose, glycogen, and fat. These nutrients are linked by metabolic pathways that can convert one to the other. By weight, fat contains three times as much energy as glucose, making it an excellent substance for energy storage. This feature explores some of the ways the body processes fat, including digestion, transport, conversion, and energy extraction.
