Trustee News
After 13 years of dedicated service to HHMI as chairman of the Board of Trustees, Hanna H. Gray, president emeritus of The University of Chicago, stepped down from that role in 2010. She will continue to serve as trustee, and Kurt L. Schmoke, dean of the Howard University School of Law, has been elected chairman. The board also elected a new trustee this year, Fred R. Lummis.
A distinguished attorney and respected advisor to several organizations, Schmoke has dedicated much of his life to public service. In addition to academia, his career has included private practice, a domestic policy position in the Carter White House, and three terms as mayor of Baltimore, MD, where he focused on improving the city’s school system and economic development. Gray, President Emeritus of The University of Chicago, will continue to serve as a Trustee.
Lummis is chairman and chief executive officer of Platform Partners, LLC, a Houston, TX-based investment company he cofounded in 2006. Lummis and his family have a long association with HHMI. His father, William R. Lummis, served as a charter trustee of the Institute for more than two decades until his retirement in 2007. The elder Lummis played a critical role in the reorganization of the Institute following the death of Howard R. Hughes, Jr., the Institute's founder and Lummis’ cousin.

HHMI headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD
Headquarters Expansion
In April 2010, HHMI completed a 75,000-square-foot expansion to its Maryland headquarters, allowing HHMI to bring its entire headquarters staff under one roof. The addition allows an increase of headquarters employees from 260 to 350 and was designed utilizing the U.S. Green Building Council’s internationally recognized green building certification system known as LEED. LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions. The expansion team consisted of Bowie Gridley Architects of Washington, D.C., architect; Louise Schiller, landscape architect; and The Mark Winkler Company of Alexandria, VA, development manager.
