As chief of communications, Brown is responsible for direction and management of internal and external communications strategy. Brown provides leadership and expertise to advance HHMI’s executive, program, and operations goals. She serves as a strategic partner to leaders across the Institute and oversees a distributed team of communicators responsible for informing and engaging key audiences.

Brown joined HHMI in 2013 as head of communications. She has more than 20 years of nonprofit communications and journalism experience, with an emphasis on accelerating research impact. Prior to joining HHMI, Brown served as vice president of marketing and communications at The Conservation Fund and worked as a communications consultant to HHMI, the National Academies, and other leading science institutions. An award-winning writer, she is a former contributing correspondent for Science and has written for Scientific American, Discover, Popular Science, New Scientist, Technology Review, and other popular media outlets. She serves as a trustee of the Association of Independent Research Institutes.

Brown earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism and psychology from the University of Missouri. She and her family live in Washington, DC.
