As chief of communications, Brown is responsible for creating and executing communications strategy that advances HHMI’s mission to drive science forward. She oversees a team of communications specialists who partner closely with program and operational staff to achieve desired external and internal goals.
Brown joined HHMI in 2013 as head of communications. She has developed an integrated content delivery team, including new internal communications capacity, that pursues outcome-focused planning and consultative problem solving. The team’s tools include HHMI’s online content, media development, asset management, branding, and events.
Prior to joining HHMI, Brown served for six years as vice president of marketing and communications at The Conservation Fund, a top-ranked environmental nonprofit. Brown also has worked as a communications consultant to HHMI, the National Academies, and other leading science institutions. An award-winning writer, she is a former contributing correspondent for Science magazine and has written for Scientific American, Discover, Popular Science, New Scientist, Technology Review, and other popular magazines.
Brown received bachelor’s degrees in journalism and psychology from the University of Missouri. She and her family live in Washington, DC.
