Marius Pachitariu wants to understand how the coordinated activity of large populations of neurons gives rise to perception and behavior. Using a protocol he developed to record and analyze the activity of approximately 10,000 neurons from the same area of the mammalian cortex, Pachitariu and his team are seeking to decipher the cortical code. The richness of the recordings provides them a chance to learn how distributed patterns of activity, across neurons, relate to an animal’s sensory experiences, and how they lead to complex, multi-dimensional behaviors.
