Regulation of Cell Death and Protein Breakdown
Hermann Steller is interested in the mechanism by which cells undergo programmed cell death (apoptosis), how this process is regulated by distinct signaling pathways, and how abnormal regulation of apoptosis contributes to a variety of diseases, including cancer. He also studies the nonlethal use of apoptotic proteins and the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for cellular remodeling.

Biography
Dr. Steller is also Strang Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Apoptosis and Cancer Biology at the Rockefeller University. Prior to this he was Professor of Neurobiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his Diplom (the German equivalent of an M.Sc. degree) in microbiology from the University of Frankfurt, Germany. His graduate research was carried out with Vincenzo Pirrotta at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and with Ekkehard Bautz at the University of Heidelberg. Dr. Steller was a postdoctoral fellow with Gerald Rubin at the University of California, Berkeley.
