Elliot Meyerowitz is interested in the mechanisms of pattern formation and growth of the plant’s shoot apical meristem (SAM) and its derivative structures, primarily flowers. Meyerowitz and his team focus on the meristem because it is responsible for the development of all above-ground parts of a mature plant and because its different pattern-forming processes are poorly understood. Working in the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana and other plants, the team combines both experimental and computational approaches. Their aim is to increase mechanistic understanding of plant growth, which has potential implications for crops as well as building materials, medicines, fabrics, and other plant-derived products.
