Freda D. Miller, Ph.D.

Freda D. Miller Freda Miller is senior scientist and professor at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute and the University of Toronto. She is the Canada Research Chair in Developmental Neurobiology and an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was previously secretary of the Society for Neurosciences and president of the International Society for Developmental Neuroscience. She is interested in development and repair of the nervous system and is best known for her studies of neural and dermal stem cells and of neuronal growth, survival, and apoptosis. She obtained her B.Sc. degree in biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, and her Ph.D. degree in medical sciences from the University of Calgary, Alberta, and completed her postdoctoral training at the Scripps Research Foundation in La Jolla, California. She then held faculty positions at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University, Quebec.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:

Freda Miller is interested in the development and establishment of neural connectivity and in understanding how this is perturbed in pathological situations. She also studies the role stem cells play in the biology of developing and adult tissues, with a particular focus on the central nervous system and the dermis.
