Dr. Levin is Principal Researcher in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Chagas Disease at the Institute for Research on Genetic Engineering and Molecular Biology, CONICET, Buenos Aires, and Associate Professor in the School of Science, Department of Biology, at the University of Buenos Aires. He received a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1981 from the Karl Marx University of Leipzig, Germany. He conducted postdoctoral work in France at INSERM, CNRS, and Institut Pasteur. He has received several prizes from the Argentine Society of Cardiology, and in 1998 he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Mariano J. Levin studies chronic Chagas heart disease, the severest consequence of infection by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. His work centers on understanding how the humoral response against this parasite contributes to generation of the different types of arrhythmias that characterize the early stages of the disease.
