Dr. Hatfull is professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. He received a B.Sc. in biological sciences from Westfield College, University of London, and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Edinburgh University. He did postdoctoral work at Yale University in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, with Dr. Nigel Grindley, and at the Medical Research Council at Cambridge University, with Dr. Bart Barrell. Some highlights of his research accomplishments include the following: more than 100 research articles and book chapters and a coedited book; uninterrupted funding by the National Institutes of Health for the past 16 years; and mentoring of 13 students to the Ph.D. degree and of more than 50 undergraduates. In addition, Dr. Hatfull has received the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award and holds the Eberly Family Professorship in Biotechnology. He was named a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and a teaching fellow of the National Academy of Science. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Bacteriology, Molecular Microbiology, and Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Graham Hatfull's research focus is the study of mycobacteriophages—viruses that infect mycobacteria. His HHMI project uses the process of bacteriophage discovery and characterization ("phage hunting") to introduce large numbers of undergraduates and high school students to the methods of scientific research. In addition, the project is creating a community in which students mentor other students.
