HHMI Summer Student Program
This program applies only to summer students in the laboratories of HHMI investigators. It does not apply to summer students in laboratories at Janelia Farm Research Campus, which is a separate program, nor does it apply to summer students at HHMI headquarters or other administrative offices.
Background
The goal of the HHMI summer student program is to offer students a chance to further their education and training through meaningful exposure to research in the laboratory of an HHMI investigator. To ensure that the program allows participating students to have a significant scientific experience, each student must spend at least six weeks in the mentoring investigator's laboratory over the summer. Students participating in the program are strongly encouraged to attend seminars and other educational events at their site that are related to their research.
Eligibility and Selection
Any matriculated undergraduate with the educational qualifications and experience necessary to benefit from participation in the program may apply. Medical students and graduate students who are not enrolled during the summer may also participate in the program. The program is not open to high school students.
Investigators select individual students to work in their laboratory primarily based on the student's educational qualifications, experience, and research interests.
Six-Week Minimum; Weekly Allowance
Students who apply to and are selected by HHMI investigators for participation in the program should spend at least six weeks in the program between May 1 and August 31. If possible, the weeks should be consecutive and partial weeks should be avoided.
The Science Department will set the amount of the weekly allowance to be provided to each summer student. A smaller weekly allowance may be paid if justifiable based on standard allowances for similar summer students at the host institution. No separate payments or reimbursements are made for travel or housing. Students will receive a prorated allowance for partial weeks spent in the program.
Guidance for HHMI Investigators
Investigators should note the following points about the HHMI summer student program:
- There is, of course, no requirement that an investigator mentor summer students in his or her laboratory.
- Students participating in HHMI's summer student program are not treated as employees and do not take the place of regular
personnel. They do not complete time reports, and they are not paid on the basis of hours worked. Instead, they receive a weekly allowance. For summer of 2008 this is expected to be $450 per week. A lower weekly allowance may be paid if it can be justified based on standard summer student allowances at the host institution.
- There is no limit on the number of summer students an investigator may host.
- Students participating in the program are expected to spend 6 to 10 weeks between the May 1 and August 31. If possible, the weeks should be consecutive, as this is most conducive to a good research experience. Also, if possible, students should be present for full weeks. If a partial week is unavoidable, the allowance may be prorated on a daily basis.
- Investigators are responsible for selecting summer students for participating in the program based primarily on their educational qualifications and research interests, which should be sufficient to enable them to benefit from the laboratory experience.
- An investigator who has selected a student for the program should let the OAS for his or her site know at least a month in advance so that the OAS is prepared to assist in coordinating payment of the allowance. Payments are made through the Accounts Payable system. Direct deposit is an option.
- The HHMI program is intended and designed to further educate and train the summer students as individuals. It is important that the research a participating student does in an investigator's laboratory serve the student's educational purposes.
- The investigator's research operations budget will be charged for the allowances for summer students in his or her laboratory.
- It is important that summer students in HHMI's program have opportunities for learning outside of the laboratory, for example by attending seminars and talks, and that they be encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.
- It is important that summer students in HHMI's program be provided with appropriate laboratory safety training. Please be sure to arrange this with the host institution.
