Shown is a fluorescence micrograph of Legionella pneumophila (L.p., red; visualized with the DNA stain propidium iodide) growing within a macrophage (Mac) 14 hours after initial contact of the bacterium with the host cell. The bacteria, which have undergone at least five division cycles, are in a membrane-bound compartment called a phagosome. The bacterial LidA protein is inserted into the phagosomal membrane. LidA (green) is visualized with antibody directed against the protein, by indirect immunofluorescence.
