Wafik S. El-Deiry, M.D., Ph.D.

Wafik  S. El-Deiry

Dr. El-Deiry is Associate Professor of Medicine, Genetics, and Pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed medical residency and oncology fellowship training at the Johns Hopkins University, where he trained with Bert Vogelstein. Dr. El-Deiry is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is the founding editor-in-chief of Cancer Biology and Therapy and serves on numerous editorial boards and peer-review panels. Dr. El-Deiry's long-term research interests include unraveling the role of p53 in apoptosis and chemosensitivity, designing novel anticancer drugs, and developing molecular imaging tools for cell-based therapeutic screening in vivo.



RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:

Wafik El-Deiry's research is aimed at understanding pathways of cell cycle control and cell death in normal and cancer cells. These efforts may lead to novel diagnostic and/or therapeutic strategies for cancer.
