Dr. Miller is senior scientist in the Department of Developmental Biology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She is also a professor at the University of Toronto. She received her Ph.D. in 1984 from the University of Calgary and did postdoctoral work in pharmacology at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. She later held positions at the University of Alberta and McGill University. In 2000 she received the Senior Investigator Award from CIHR, in 2002 she shared the Barbara Turnbull Award, and in 2004 she was elected president of the International Society for Developmental Neuroscience and a councillor of the Society for Neuroscience. In 2005 she was awarded a Canada Research Chair in Developmental Neurobiology and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Freda Miller is interested in the role stem cells play in the biology of adult tissues and in using adult stem cells to study and treat diseases of the nervous system and neural crest. Her work focuses on SKPs, a population of accessible adult stem cells that reside in mammalian skin.
