Dr. Levashina received her Ph.D. in 1994 from St. Petersburg State University in Russia, and her D.Habil. in 2001 from the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. She currently holds the position of CNRS research director at the Institut de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire in Strasbourg. She has received EMBO and UNESCO fellowships; in 2003, she received the Principal Award from the Schlumberger Foundation for Education and Research. In 2004, she was awarded the INSERM Career Development Award "Avenir" and was named an EMBO Young Investigator.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Elena A. Levashina is studying the role of the insect immune system in the survival of malaria parasites in the Anopheles mosquito, the insect vector that transmits malaria to humans. Her work has implications for development of novel vector control strategies.
