Dr. León received a Ph.D. in molecular biology in 1991 from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Cuernavaca. She went on to conduct postdoctoral work in the United States at Harvard University as a Pew Latin American Fellow. In 1994, she received the Gabino Barreda Medal. She now holds the position of principal investigator in the Plant Biology Department of
the Institute of Biotechnology, National Autonomous University of Mexico. She has been coeditor of Plant Cell since 2004.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Research in the León group relates to the molecular mechanisms involved in glucose perception and signaling mechanisms and the regulation of chloroplast development in higher plants. These questions are being addressed using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system and multidisciplinary approaches including traditional genetics and cellular, biochemical, molecular, and genomic strategies.
