Dr. DosReis received an M.D. in 1977 and a Ph.D. in immunology in 1983, both from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He conducted postdoctoral research in the United States at the Laboratory of Immunology at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, where he later served as a Fogarty Visiting Scientist. He is a four-time recipient of the Scientists of our State Award from the Rio de Janeiro State Science Foundation, and in 2002 was awarded the National Medal of Science by the president of Brazil and a Guggenheim international fellowship. Dr. DosReis is a member of the Brazilian National Academy of Sciences and the Third World Academy of Sciences. He is currently professor at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and top career investigator of the Brazilian National Research Council. His HHMI-funded work is on the role of programmed cell death in the pathogenesis and therapy of trypanosome infections.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
George DosReis's research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of macrophage and dendritic cell differentiation in response to ingestion of apoptotic cells and their role on innate and adaptive immune responses against trypanosome infections.
