Dr. Djimdé is chief of laboratory at the Malaria Research and Training Center of the University of Bamako in Mali. He received his Ph.D. in 2001 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He worked from 1995 to 1999 as a visiting fellow in the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health. In 2001, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre National from the Government of Mali, presented by the President of Mali. In 2002, he received the Fighting Malaria Prize from the Federation of the European Societies for Tropical Medicine and International Health, and, in 2004, he received a Senior Fellowship from the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Abdoulaye Djimdé is conducting clinical, entomological, and molecular studies to improve understanding of resistance to current inexpensive and commonly prescribed antimalarial drugs. He is focused on improving the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the spread of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to quinine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine.
