Dr. Chumakov is currently chief of laboratory at the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology in Moscow, where, in 1979, he received his Ph.D. and, in 1989, his D.Sc. He also holds an M.D. from the Sechenov Moscow Medical Institute. He has conducted research in the United States at the Cleveland Clinic and at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He has also worked as a visiting scientist at the Marie Curie Research Institute in the United Kingdom. He received his first HHMI International Research Scholar award in 1995. This is his second HHMI award.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT SUMMARY:
Peter Chumakov studies mechanisms controlling genetic stability by focusing on the functions of the p53 tumor suppressor. He also studies mechanisms that control antioxidant defense and redox signaling as well as the role of the novel nuclear spRNAP-IV polymerase in gene expression control.
