International Early Career Scientists
Science is a multinational, cross-cultural endeavor that connects researchers across the borders created by discipline and continent. HHMI believes it is vital to encourage the careers and scientific creativity of scientists working abroad.
In this pilot program, HHMI identified scientists who are, or have the potential to become, scientific leaders. The International Early Career Scientist program awards each selected scientist $650,000 over five years with the goal of helping these talented individuals establish independent research programs.
The 28 scientists, who are at 22 institutions in 12 countries, have led their own laboratories for less than seven years.

Chosen scientists were from 12 countries—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Hungary, India, Italy, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, South Africa, and Spain.
