Computational and Mathematical Modeling of Neurons and Neural Networks

Summary: Larry Abbott’s research involves using computer simulation and mathematical methods to analyze and model how neural circuits perform their functions. Topics of study include olfaction, motor pattern generation, memory and decision making. computational modeling and mathematical analysis of neurons and neural networks

Mathematical and computer-based models can help us to develop and test ideas about how neural circuits work. I apply this approach to olfactory and motor systems, and to the general problem of how neural networks store and process information. At Janelia, I intend to expand this work to include studies of hippocampal place cells, exploring how they are created and remapped in different environments.
