2013 HHMI Investigator Competition

The 2013 HHMI Investigator competition is now closed. The deadline to submit all application materials was June 13, 2012.

Review of Applications

The Institute expects to appoint between 20–30 new investigators. HHMI review process will include evaluation of applications by distinguished scientists, leading to the selection of semifinalists by early in 2013.

Further review will include a symposium attended by HHMI scientific leadership and the final advisory panel, at which each semifinalist will make a brief research presentation.

Finalists will be announced in the spring of 2013 with appointments as early as September 1, 2013.

All applicants should mark their calendars for the April 8-9, 2013, symposium at Janelia Farm Research Campus in Ashburn, Virgina. Those named as semifinalists will be required to attend and should plan to arrive on April 7.

Positions at Janelia Farm Research Campus:

Laboratory Heads
HHMI invites applications from biochemists, biologists, chemists, computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, neurobiologists and physicists who are passionate in their pursuit of important problems in basic scientific and technical research. We encourage applications from scientists at all career stages: from those just finishing their graduate degrees to senior, established scientists.

We will make appointments at one of two levels:

  • Fellows
Fellows are independent scientists with labs of up to two additional members. Appointments are for five years.

  • Group Leaders
Group leaders are independent scientists, similar to HHMI investigators, with labs of up to six additional members. The initial appointment is for six years. Thereafter, group leaders will be reviewed for reappointment every five years.

There are two application deadlines per year. The first competition of the year opens on March 1, and closes
July 15. The second opens September 1, and closes November 15.

All laboratories are internally funded without extramural grants. Lab heads have no formal teaching duties and minimal administrative responsibilities. They are expected to engage in the direct conduct of research and in intellectual interaction with their colleagues. Individual research groups are limited in size, comprising postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and technicians. Janelia Farm hosts conferences; group leaders are encouraged to organize meetings in their areas of interest.

Janelia Junior Fellows
Junior fellows are postdoctoral fellows who develop their own research programs and work with minimal direct advising. They are appointed for a period of up to three years with a possible two year renewal. Junior fellows are mentored by two or more people. Mentors may be Janelia Farm lab heads, visiting scientists from other institutions and members of project teams. The junior fellow position is intended for individuals at an early career stage and/or people who have specific research plans but who value the guidance and collaboration of more experienced mentors.

There are four application deadlines per year: March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1.

Postdoctoral Associates
Completed applications reviewed regularly.
Postdoctoral associates work in the laboratory of a Janelia Farm group leader or fellow. Appointments are reviewed annually and may be renewed a maximum of four times (maximum of five years in residence). Applications must be made to specific group leaders or fellows.
