The Summer Medical Fellows Program is primarily aimed at students who later intend to apply for the year-long Medical Fellows Program. Summer Medical Fellows spend eight to 10 weeks doing full-time research with an HHMI investigator, early career scientist, or Janelia researcher. Fellows are exposed to high-quality science, have a chance to increase their scientific knowledge and research skills, and interact with world-class investigators in a rich training environment. Fellows can gain insight into a career as a medical scientist and determine if they would like to continue their research training in a year-long program.
This program is for medical, dental, and veterinary students attending schools located in the United States. Up to 20 fellowships are awarded annually.
Eligibility
Students must be in their first or second year and in good standing at a medical, dental, or veterinary school located in the United States.
Students cannot be enrolled in a combined medical, dental, or veterinary/PhD program (e.g., MD/PhD) or PhD, or ScD program, or have a PhD or ScD in a laboratory-based biological science.
Students must be able to conduct full-time research for at least eight consecutive weeks (10 weeks preferred).
Students cannot have already received an HHMI Summer Medical Fellows Program award, or an award from any year-long research training program.
Students may not concurrently receive funding from another source for summer research.
