At the 6,000-cell stage, if a Xenopus frog is divided into two equal halves (e.g. left half and right half), each half will re-form a smaller but perfect tadpole, thus giving rise to monozygotic twins. The molecular mechanism underlying such a phenomenon is not understood and has long been an embryological mystery.
