HHMI Issues Notice of Fraudulent Activity
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has become aware that fraudulent checks bearing the Howard Hughes Medical Institute name or acronym “HHMI” have been issued in connection with a lottery scam.
The scam has many variations, but typically involves a letter informing a recipient that he or she has won a lottery and will receive a prize once taxes are paid on the winnings. Recipients may be asked to cash a fraudulent check and then write a personal check to cover the tax payment in order to claim the prize money.
Please be advised that the Howard Hughes Medical Institute has no connection to any lottery or promotion.
If you receive a questionable check bearing the Howard Hughes Medical Institute name or “HHMI” as payer, please do not cash the check. Please contact the Institute at (301) 215-8500 and you will be directed to an appropriate member of staff who can answer your questions.
