HHMI Undergraduate Science Education Program

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) awards competitive grants to colleges and research universities to enhance the quality of their teaching in biology and related sciences and to attract students, including members of groups underrepresented in the sciences, to research and teaching careers.

Through its complementary HHMI Professors Program, 20 leading research scientists received $1 million each to find innovative ways to bring the excitement and rigor of research to the undergraduate classroom.

A new partnership between HHMI's science and grants departments, called Exceptional Research Opportunities (EXROP), provides research experiences for disadvantaged undergraduates in the labs of HHMI investigators and HHMI professors.

  • HHMI has awarded more than $606 million to 241 colleges and universities in 47 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
  • About 50,000 undergraduates have received support to do laboratory research.
  • Nearly 74,000 K-12 teachers and 270,000 students have participated in Institute-supported science outreach programs.
  • Approximately 12,000 new science courses have been developed.
  • 328 faculty members have been appointed in a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary positions.
