Biomedical Research News in Spanish
Internet users who speak Spanish can now receive news reports about discoveries in genetics, neuroscience and other fields of biomedical research from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. HHMI, one of the world's largest philanthropies, has established a free service to distribute this news in Spanish electronically. Recent stories have focused on HIV infection, genes related to anxiety and cancer, and a new series of scientific workshops for researchers in Latin America.
All the stories are available on HHMI's Web site at www.hhmi.org, which includes a wide array of other online resources about biomedical research and science education. To receive E-mail notification about the stories posted in Spanish, individuals can sign up for "Noticias del HHMI" at
www.hhmi.org/suscribirse.html.
The news service is the first of a series of free resources that HHMI is planning to produce in Spanish. It is now translating into Spanish a series of award-winning Web reports that explain in nontechnical language what scientists are learning about topics such as how our senses work and how genetic defects lead to disease.
HHMI carries out biomedical research with its own scientific teams at more than 70 universities and medical centers across the United States. Its annual budget exceeds $600 million. The Institute awards more than $100 million annually through its complementary grants program, primarily to enhance science education at all levels in the United States. Its international program supports the research of biomedical scientists around the globe, including researchers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Venezuela.
