HHMI Appoints Two Senior Scientific Officers
Howard Hughes Medical Institute has appointed two prominent researchers as senior scientific officers. Denis A. Baylor and Philip S. Perlman will work at Institute headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland, to support the research of HHMI investigators in more than 300 laboratories across the nation.
Baylor joins HHMI after more than 27 years as a neuroscientist and faculty member at Stanford University, where he remains a professor emeritus of neurobiology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a foreign member of the Royal Society of London. His research has focused on the neuroscience of vision. As a senior scientific officer at HHMI, he will oversee the work of HHMI investigators in the western part of the country.
“Denis's experiences in an academic medical center and his ability to advise us on emerging opportunities in the neurosciences will be invaluable,” said David A. Clayton, HHMI vice president and chief scientific officer.
Perlman, currently a professor of molecular biology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, will leave UT Southwestern and join HHMI on July 1, 2004. He holds the Roy and Christine Sturgis Chair in Biomedical Research at UT Southwestern, where he also served as acting dean of the Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Before that he was chairman of molecular genetics at The Ohio State University. His research has focused on the expression of mitochondrial genes of yeast. He will be responsible for HHMI investigators on the East Coast.
“Philip has been responsible for many activities relevant to HHMI's missions, including graduate training, as well as his own productive research in molecular genetics,” Clayton said.
HHMI scientific officer Carl D. Rhodes will assume responsibility for investigators working in the Midwest. He will continue to manage the investigator review process and organize scientific meetings at HHMI headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
