HHMI Awards $15 Million in Grants to Support Biomedical Scientists
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has awarded a new round of grants totaling $15 (US) million to 46 biomedical researchers from nine countries of the Baltics, Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Each scientist will receive between $225,000 and $450,000 over five years.
"These new International Research Scholars are outstanding scientists who are studying a wide variety of biomedical problems, often with limited resources," said HHMI President Thomas R. Cech. "These grants will enable them to remain in their home countries and make important contributions not only as researchers, but also as teachers and mentors for the next generation of scientists."
The scientists are citizens of Russia (18), Hungary (8), Czech Republic (6), Estonia (4), Poland (3), Lithuania (3), Slovakia (2), Ukraine (1) and Bulgaria (1). HHMI selected them competitively on the basis of their accomplishments, potential and research plans. The scientists are studying topics that range from molecular genetics to protein folding, multi-drug resistance in cancer and the workings of neurotransmitters.
This is HHMI's second round of grants in the region. In 1995, it awarded $15 million in grants to support the research of 90 scientists, as well as their students, laboratory teams and institutions. It also organized scientific meetings in Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, Moscow and Chevy Chase that brought the scientists together. The new grants again total $15 million but will provide more money per grant to fewer people, including the first Bulgarian scientist selected by HHMI.
Through its international program, HHMI has now awarded $83 million in grants to biomedical researchers in 32 countries since 1991. The program complements HHMI's principal activity of carrying out research with its own scientific teams at 72 locations across the United States.
