Shared Research SupportResearch at Janelia Farm is supported by a central collection of shared equipment, facilities, and resources, including the following: DROSOPHILAThe Drosophila facility provides stock-keeping, quarantine, transgenic and screening services. This facility uses two stock-keeping robots. The maximum capacity of these robots is 16,000 strains. We also have several controlled-temperature culture rooms, a fly-sorting room, microscope rooms and rooms designed for behavior assays. CELL & TISSUE CULTUREThe cell culture facility has 500 sq. ft. of space and is equipped and staffed for extensive cell culture services. There are 4 culture hoods and 8 incubators with a reserve of 2 more hoods and 2 more incubators in an adjacent histology facility. The facility staff offers Janelia researchers equipment access and cell culture services, in addition to training in basic tissue culture and cell-handling methods. ELECTRON MICROSCOPYThe electron microscope facility offers a range of microscopes and services, including:
The facility has 5000 sq. ft. of space with state-of-the-art equipment for support of researchers using electron microscopy. Sample preparation is available by conventional wet chemistry, microwave techniques, and high-pressure freezing/freeze-substitution. LIGHT MICROSCOPYThe facility has 2,000 sq. ft. of space with state-of-the-art equipment to support the needs of researchers in light microscopy. We offer confocal, live-cell imaging, and wide-field imaging stations. In addition to the multiple microscope stations we have two workstations dedicated to image analysis. These workstations are designed to handle very large images and databases. We offer image analysis software like LSM (Carl Zeiss Microimaging), Volocity (Improvision) and Slidebook (3I). HISTOLOGY & ANATOMYThe histology/anatomy facility has 500 sq. ft. of space of workspace and is equipped and staffed for tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry. This facility offers Janelia researchers equipment access, cryostat, and antibody-labeling services. In addition this facility also provides training in cell and tissue labeling, and cryostat sectioning. There are two chemical fume hoods, two laminar flow hoods, and four CO2 incubators with a reserve of four additional laminar flow hoods and eight CO2 incubators in the adjacent cell culture facility. MOLECULAR BIOLOGYThe Molecular Biology facility offers DNA sequencing, quantitative PCR, vector design and development, nucleic acid purification, hybridization and addition to clone resource management and distribution. We have a 16 channel ABI 3130xl Genetic Analyzer for DNA sequencing, a 96-well device for quantitative PCR for genotyping and RNA analysis and flexible robotic systems for liquid handling. STOCKROOMOver 500 lab supplies and small equipment items are available in the Stockroom, which offers convenient "desktop shopping" to allow scientists to order items online and have them delivered to the lab within four hours. The Stockroom is operated by Fisher Managed Services and is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week for self-service. INSTRUMENT DESIGN & FABRICATIONThis facility consists of two machine shops and assists scientists with system fabrication and mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. In addition this facility provides CAD design, component manufacturing, assembly, integration, and test services. GLASSWASH AND STERILIZATIONThe Materials Management group provides glassware washing and sterilization services. Used glassware is collected from the labs and then washed and restocked on a daily basis. This facility at full capacity can wash an estimated 600 glass items a day. MEDIA PREPOur Media Preparation facility provides stock solutions, as well as several formats of Drosophila and bacterial media. This facility also provides customized media preparations. DATACENTEROur shared Scientific Computing Infrastructure offers a robust set of resources, tools, and personnel to help researchers solve scientific and technical challenges. The Data Center is 5000 sq. ft. and houses a 1000+ CPU compute cluster, over 200 terabytes of disk storage, 1 petabyte of tiered storage under management and dozens of additional servers in support of specific needs and applications. This is all brought together as one virtual computing infrastructure by a non-blocking 10 Gb network core and a parallel/distributed file system that provides unparalleled I/O throughput. It is all based on open source solutions with standard compliant protocols and services. LIBRARYThe library at Janelia Farm Research Campus provides easy access to information through a variety of resources. Features of the physical library include: high-speed, networked multi-function copiers and printers; networked desktop computers; a comfortable reading room; and a quiet work area with individual cubicles; all available 24/7.
