Laboratories

  • Mats G.L. Gustafsson, Ph.D.
    Group Leader

    RESEARCH FOCUS:

Mats Gustafsson is interested in creating new forms of biological light microscopy, especially modes with higher spatial resolution than is normally allowed by the diffraction limit. More
  • Timothy D. Harris, Ph.D.
    Associate Director, Applied Physics
    and Instrumentation Group

    RESEARCH FOCUS:

Tim Harris studies expression patterns and the resulting protein patterns that are responsible for the processes of cell differentiation and organism development. More
  • Harald F. Hess, Ph.D.
Director, Applied Physics and Instrumentation Group

    RESEARCH FOCUS:

Harald Hess leads a group of scientists and engineers in the Applied Physics and Instrumentation Group (APIG). Their goal is to promote and establish advanced technology that will be unique to the Janelia Farm Research Campus and of collective benefit to its researchers. More
  • Vivek Jayaraman, Ph.D.
    Fellow

    RESEARCH FOCUS:

Vivek Jayaraman is interested in understanding how information from different senses is represented and integrated by ensembles of neurons in the brain. His lab plans to use a combination of experimental and computational techniques to explore multimodal circuits in the fruit fly brain. The lab's long-term goal is to link computation in such circuits to the insect's behavioral decisions. More
  • Alla Y. Karpova, Ph.D.
    Group Leader

    RESEARCH FOCUS:

Alla Karpova's goal is to understand the circuitry behind the ability of animals to adapt their behavior to constantly changing reward contingencies. She is also interested in how dysfunctions in this circuitry lead to diseases of perseveration, such as addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder. More
  • Rex A. Kerr, Ph.D.
    Fellow

    RESEARCH FOCUS:

Rex Kerr builds and uses advanced volume-imaging microscopes to study how behavior in C. elegans is generated by activity in its nervous system. More
