Carnegie Mellon University is a private doctoral/research university-extensive in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. HHMI awarded the university grants of $1.2 million in 1989, $1.5 million in 1994, $1.6 million in 1998, $2.2 million in 2002, and $1.5 million in 2006, for combined total funding of $8.0 million through the undergraduate program. The 2006 grant supports the following programs:


Student Research and Broadening Access to Science

Focus on interdisciplinary research and education by enhancing and strengthening summer research for rising sophomores while expanding the involvement of students with backgrounds in quantitative fields.


Curriculum, Equipment, and Laboratory Development

Several new interdisciplinary lecture and laboratory courses in biology, attracting students in fields including mathematics, statistics, engineering, and computer science.


Faculty Development

Convening annual symposium with an alternating focus on computational molecular biology and interdisciplinary topics in other domains.


Precollege and Other Outreach Programs

An outreach program focused on expanding the pipeline of minority students who are prepared to succeed in the sciences.
