Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), which have a 72% minority enrollment and an 82% poverty rate, face mounting challenges to improve science education and achievement. IPS is implementing strategies to improve educational outcomes including the launch in 2006 of a 6th-12th grade Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School (CAMMHS). CAMMHS offers a demanding series of courses to prepare students for careers in biomedical fields. We propose to build on the progress made with the development of CAMMHS by creating an educational partnership between Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and CAMMHS to stimulate interest and success in science education for talented, underrepresented minority students. The overarching goal of our project is to improve the ability of underrepresented minority students to enter biomedical science careers. To accomplish this goal, we plan to achieve five program objectives as follows: 1. We will broaden student access to science careers by creating a Student Tutorial Program for mathematics and science, staffed by specially trained IUSM related health professions students and basic science graduate students. 2. We will stimulate interest in biomedical science careers by providing opportunities for CAMMHS and IUSM students to participate together in career exploration and mentoring activities through a Student Mentoring Program. 3. We will improve student learning of scientific inquiry processes and techniques by supporting the professional development of CAMMHS teachers' research knowledge and lab skills, to be applied in the classroom, through a Teacher Research Program. 4. We will also develop students' abilities to engage in scientific discovery using problem solving techniques by supporting the professional pedagogical development of CAMMHS teachers through workshops in the Problem Based Learning teaching methodology. 5. We will introduce students to hands on, cutting edge science and research by creating a Capstone Student Summer Research program for select students.
