This project will create a laboratory skills development program for Rochester City middle and high school students through the Life Sciences Learning Center (LSLC), a pre-collegiate hands-on science education laboratory located at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Students will participate in hands-on science investigations both within their classrooms and at the LSLC. In addition, the program will train science educators in laboratory-based teaching.

LSLC science education professionals will work with classroom teachers to lead a series of in-school sessions with the students prior to their visit to the LSLC. Each science class will take part in two in-school sessions prior to their LSLC visit, and then one in-school session as a follow-up to their LSLC visit. All sessions will be co-taught with the student's science teacher, thereby fostering an educational partnership between the LSLC and the teacher.

The teacher training will also offer advice on how LSLC laboratory investigations align with New York State Science Education Standards and how to incorporate these activities into the teachers' existing curricula.
