The HMMI/HOPE (Health Occupations Partners in Education) program brings together eight professional schools and colleges at the University of Michigan, undergraduate and graduate student organizations, a local community college, a major pharmaceutical company, and local community organizations to implement a series of teacher, student and family programs with the aim of increasing awareness of health issues, interest in health science careers, and academic preparation for these among minority and disadvantaged students during their elementary and secondary school years.
The University of Michigan Medical School will assemble a group of Ypsilanti public school science and mathematics teachers, University faculty, and Pfizer scientists to form the Science and Mathematics Academic Resource Team (SMART). This group will meet weekly throughout the school year to discuss science curriculum needs and to develop new inquiry-based, curricular modules. The modules will be aligned with National Science Education Standards, and will highlight significant issues in the biomedical sciences, especially those of critical significance for minority and disadvantaged populations. The curriculum units will be piloted during weekly after-school science clubs and summer programs. The expectation is that the final products of this pilot testing will be adapted by teachers for use during the regular school year in their science classrooms. It is hoped, furthermore, that once the SMART team becomes established, teachers will be able to earn continuing education unit (CEU) credit hours for their participation.
Finally, the University of Michigan Medical School will establish and facilitate meetings of the HOPE Parent Association where project partners will lead parents in discussions of how to improve their children's academic performance and how to prepare their children for college, both financially, and in terms of course-selection during high schoo
