With this grant, The Jackson Laboratory (TJL) will continue its program of inquiry-based research mentorships for high-school students, and will serve science teachers-in-training through a new partnership with the University of Maine (UMaine), the state's flagship educational institution.
TJL proposes a mentored research internship for student teachers-in-training in UMaine's new Master of Science in Teaching (MST) program. This partnership will offer hands-on training that provides a stronger biological focus for the MST program. The UMaine educators will guide participants in translating their research experience to the classroom. The one-semester internship at TJL will earn participants academic credit through the MST program. The teachers-in-training will be on-campus concurrently with the academic-year high school interns and will interact with the students through everyday contacts in the laboratory and a series of formal meetings hosted by the TJL Education Office. The program will be administered by a Program Director with guidance from a Steering Committee comprising key participants and other professional educators.
To maximize the benefit of their research experience, student teachers will meet regularly during the internship with the UMaine Center for Science and Mathematics Education Research to develop plans for incorporating their experiences into effective classroom teaching. The Center will also monitor alumni progress through follow-up visits to their classrooms.
